Ossining WWII Veteran Recipient of Free Home Energy Makeover

PRESS RELEASE - May 10, 2013

Ossining, NY. WWII veteran Victor Paolantonio will receive a home energy makeover next week when a group of local certified energy efficiency contractors join together to retrofit his 61 year old home. The retrofit will save approximately 50% of his heating costs. All of this work will be done at no cost to Mr. Paolantonio.

The home will be insulated and air sealed, a high-efficiency heat pump and ductless system installed and the home properly ventilated to ensure indoor air quality. Andrew Fischer of Bright Home Energy Solutions, one of the contractors who is donating time to this project, says “what we are doing is part of a full scale Home Performance with Energy Star assessment and upgrade. We expect to save the Paolantonio’s around 30% on overall energy bills, and closer to 50% on his oil. And make the house a whole lot more comfortable.”

The average home in Westchester can save $1,000 or more per year on their utility bills, according to Energize NY, the nonprofit energy efficiency outfit that rates contractors and provides energy efficiency education for homeowners in northern Westchester. For a homeowner on a fixed income like Victor, that can have a big impact on their monthly expenses.

The Building Performance Contractors Association of NYS (BPCA/NYS) is the driving force behind this effort. Spokesperson Vincent Hannigan of Bruni & Campisi says “The contractors of the BPCA are proud to honor all of our veterans on this Memorial Day. We’re all glad to put our hammers to good use! Really we are glad we can use our skills and resources to do something so meaningful. All of our veterans’ deserve our gratitude and respect for the sacrifices they made.  Our BPCA members are honored to help local veterans permanently save money on their energy bills.”

Work will be conducted on the Ossining home the week before Memorial Day. Daughters Lucille and Angela were in the midst of discussing their parent’s growing energy costs, and whether it made sense to stay in this house. Mrs. Paolantonio kindly offered to turn down the thermostat even further (it had already been set at 62 this winter, to save on oil costs). That’s when the daughters knew they had to act. Lucille went online and found Energize Ossining’s website and applied for an energy assessment. A NYSERDA approved home energy expert from Bruni & Campisi came out to evaluate the home, and after checking out the walls and attic, boiler and appliances, and running diagnostic tests, came up with a list recommended measures that would help the Paolantonio’s save energy. After discussing the options with the daughters, and with Victor himself who used to be a contractor, he found out that Victor was a former home builder, a WWII vet, and a perfect candidate for the BPCA’s Veteran’s Program.
